We ditched our truck for canoes to bring in the parts and finish the well installations in three African Communities. This is what it looks like when commitment goes further than conditions.
There’s a certain kind of road you don’t talk about much.
The kind where things don’t go as planned. Where progress is slow, and the weight of continuing feels heavier than stopping. Where you learn what it means to keep moving—not because it’s easy, but because something in you refuses to turn back.
If you’ve ever been there, you know.
For the past several weeks, we’ve been watching the skies and looking for breaks in the Mozambique rainy season. Waiting for just enough time to move. To push through mud and rushing rivers and reach three communities in the African bush.
They’ve been waiting too.
The boreholes were already drilled. The concrete bases already set. Everything was ready, except for one final piece: the pumps that would allow them to lift clean water from the ground.
Last week, our team decided it was time. They headed out knowing it wouldn’t be easy.
Hours in, the road disappeared into mud. Our Unimog service truck, built for terrain like this, was swallowed—completely stuck. No clear recovery point. No quick way out. Just time, effort, and a decision: stop, or keep going.
So they kept going.
For hours, they worked. Digging. Adjusting. Trying again. Eventually, they called on a nearby village, and together, they pulled the truck free.
They pressed on, until the water ahead rose too high to cross.
So they adapted.
They unloaded the equipment, piece by piece, and moved it the only way left—by hollowed-out canoes.
Because turning back wasn’t an option. Not when people were still waiting. And if you’ve ever been there, really there, you understand that kind of decision: the resolve to keep moving forward, even when everything in you suggests otherwise.
Turning back wasn’t an option. Not when people were still waiting.
The Impact of this Clean Water Mozambique Project
Today, those three communities have something they didn’t have before: clean, safe drinking water, certainty, and real-time hope.
That’s what makes the difficult path worth it.
At Vox, we don’t stop. We don’t turn back. We keep going, until waiting is no longer part of their story.
